Mistabishi - Drop

19th February, 2009

Jamie Pullen aka Mistabishi has released his debut album entitled "Drop" and it's a real mixed bag of sorts.

By that I mean, it is a Drum n Bass / Grime album -- but also, there are hits and misses.

So, let's start with the good news -- "Heaven's Sake", which is an absolute champion track with lush strings and vocals to match, my only gripe is that this track is too short (just under 4 minutes). We're then treated to the incredibly awesome "No Matter What", a track that was originally released in 2007, which is why I was surprised that "She Lied" didn't also make it onto this LP. Tracks that did make it were of course, the mighty "Greed" (which is good) and the fun, toe tapping "Lean".

Now, I'll talk about some of the bad ... "Printer Jam" has to be the worst track ever. Anyone who has ever worked in IT or in an office environment, will loathe the sound of a dot matrix printer and Mistabishi takes that sound and amplifies it. If you've managed to hear Danny Byrd's rush job aka Hospital Mix 7 -- when Danny drops "Printer Jam", it utterly destroys the mix.

A close second for worst track of the year goes to "Wipe Your Tears" featuring a fat grime bass with the most annoying vocalist and lyrics to boot. Thankfully, it's not all bad news, with "White Collar Grime" -- it's time to get grimey, with it's down and dirty bass / beats. "Damage" starts off like the soundtrack to an awesome zombie movie and then kicks it up a notch.

Being classically trained, Mistabishi goes full steam ahead on the piano tip with the chilled "View from Nowhere" and the sublime "The Light's Really Bad".

Mistabishi obviously didn't want to end on a sore note, saving the best for last, with "From Memory" -- a beautiful track with vocals from the man himself; this track will definitely get lots of early morning / final track airplay.

"Drop" is out on 25th February on Hospital Records.
