Armand Van Helden - New York: A Mix Odyssey 2

1st October, 2008

Written by: sikosis ( Sikosis).

Armand Van Helden has hit the decks again with his second instalment in his "New York: A Mix Odyssey" series.

Even though Armand hails from Boston, Massachusetts, he is based in New York and his New York: A Mix Odyssey pays homage to old school rap/hip hop and other early house songs that have definitely influenced Armand (and a lot of other people) over the years.

This mix takes me back to when I was a teenager with classic hits from Nitro Deluxe "This Brutal House", Doug Lazy "Let it Roll", Eric B & Rakim "Juice (Know the Ledge)" and what mix wouldn't be complete without the first lady of battle raps Roxanne Shante's "Go on Girl".

We're then treated to more of what I would call the cream of female rappers with Queen Latifah's "Come into my House" and Monie Love's "Grandma's Party". Jungle Brothers "I'll House You" pops up, along with a number other Hip House tracks, a genre that was short-lived in the late 80s / early 90s.

Another short-lived genre in the history of electronic music was Acid House. So, it's with no surprise that on this journey, we make a brief stop to drop some acid with Fast Eddie's "Acid Thunder" and Maurice's "This is Acid".

At this point in the mix, Armand begins to serve up his own tunes, which are heavily inspired by the previous tracks and they contain his signature overuse of samples ;) That being said, several days later after listening to this mix, it was Van Helden's "Touch Your Toes" and "Shake That Ass", which I had swimming around in my head.

Previously we reported on some rather unsettling news for web broadcasters in the United States regarding royalties for digital content. There was quite a lot of controversy over the excessive charges that were introduced that were only applicable to internet distribution.
