In Progress - St Petersburg EP

14th January, 2008

Time and time again Captured release quality music that makes you sit up and take notice. Their latest release on their digital only sub-label Captured Digital continues this trend with In Progress ' (Radko Pavel Leonidovich) debut EP St Petersburg.

This trance heavy release features two remixes of Crossover from John Huijbers and Mike Shiver while the B-side gives you In Progress' original version of Avalanche alongside alternative remixes from swiss duo Koris & DJule and newcomer Omnia.

Crossover is everything you expect from a typical trance track these days showcasing a driving beat and clean synths. John Huijber's remix has a bit of a false start giving you the sense you've heard it all before but takes a nice twist around the halfway point conjuring a lot of energy that would make it ideal as a transitional track. Mike Shiver applies his trademark 'Catching Sun' edit that unfortunately is a little too signature and doesn't do enough to sustain your interest. It has a nice flow and has a real sense of depth but with no real highlights it all blends so well you quickly forget what you're listening to.

The original version of Avalanche is another driving trancer that switches between light and dark seamlessly giving it a nice intensity and flow. Koris & DJule focus on the darker side for a more progressive interpretation but I feel they could have done more as it sounds a little too much like the original without the intensity. Omnia hits the right spot with a quality reworking that takes it even deeper and loses a lot of the synths making the track more focused. This allows for a real sense of progression as the track ebbs and wanes.

Like all of Captured's releases the mastering really shines through (with the exception of the Mike Shiver Edit) unlike many new releases these days. I feel this is becoming a real problem as digital releases gain momentum so I think it's worthwhile highlighting. Be sure to take a listen to Omnia's work as I expect to see good things from this artist in the near future.

In Progress - St Petersburg EP will be released on Captured Digital on January 21.

I like the John Huijber's remix of Crossover, the stampy bassline in the second half does lend itself to a nice transition track. I also like the Omnia remix of Avalanche i think if it was pitched up a little you could really get the crowd moving.
