Lange - Better Late Than Never

19th November, 2007

Written by: SJ Regan ( sjregan).

After 10 years since signing his first record deal with Positiva, Lange has finally released his debut artist album 'Better Late Than Never ' and let me tell you, you are definitely going to want to get your hands on it. Presented in a double CD package the first disc features all new material made specifically for the album, while the second disc titled 'History' is a collection of top hits and favourites from the last decade.

I have been following Lange for most of his career and was really curious to see what the artist album would be like. As with most artist albums I did not expect it to be full of dance floor hits but at the same time I did not expect the level of diversity expressed on disc one. It feels like the album has been a very carthatic exercise for Lange giving it a haunting sound with a recurring feel of escapism.

The progression of the tracks on disc one is very deliberate; constantly moving forward interspersed with ebbs and flows. The opening track 'Nearly Home' begins with the familiar hiss and pop of a needle on vinyl which fades away and then re-appears again at the close of the final track 'Home'. It's this constant attention to detail that makes the album stand out. The last time I was this impressed with the quality of a production would have been for BT's 'Movement In Still Life' which was released in 2000.

While elements of Lange's recent singles can be found throughout the album I don't foresee many of the tracks being released as they stand (which is to be expected) but first up on the list for re-work as a single would have to be 'Out of the Sky' featuring Sarah Howells. With catchy vocals and a natural bass line this track was an instant classic for me and it won't be surprise me to hear it round the traps for a while to come.

Disc two is a great disc to throw on to bring back the memories featuring classics such as 'Drifting Away', 'Sincere', 'Another You, Another Me' and Lange's remix of SuReal - 'You Take My Breath Away'. Obviously included as a bonus disc it isn't required to make the purchase worthwhile, but certainly adds a nice touch.

Lange - Better Late than Never is available for download now. This is one album you really need to get a copy of!
