Curvve Recordings have been steadily building a reputation for releasing engaging tracks and their latest Benny Maze featuring Drew Brody - Utopia is no exception.
The original mix features a nice heavy kick and electro elements that gets you tapping your foot and provides a solid progressive groundwork for Drew's laid back vocals. Overlaid with simple female accompaniment the vocals meter the track and help bring you through the journey. The breakdown uses spoken word and sweeping pads to bring a sense of urgency matching the heavy kick. Put all these elements together and you get a very tight package.
The dub version of the original softens the drums and bass making the overall feel of the track more relaxed but I find myself preferring the original due to it's inherit sense of motion. The Ortega and Gold remix brings out the electro elements more making the track bounce along but I cannot shake the feeling more could have been done, especially coming out of the breakdown.
Oddly named New Zealand producer Bumspeak has worked his progressive house magic and breathes new life into the track by simplifying the vocals and overlaying atmospheric synths. A simple yet effective break-beat has also been added to the spoken word breakdown making his remix much more than a 'tweak'. I'm hard pressed to pick a favourite between the Original and Bumspeak Remix but I think the moody nature of Bumspeak puts it over the line.
Overall Utopia is tasty morsel you should definitely add to your collection.
