We have all been in the frustrating position of having a song stuck in our head but being unable to recall the name but soon, thanks to ten years of research we may only need hum it to our computer it will tell us everything we want to know.
RMIT’s Sandra Uitdenbogerd has developed test software that will listen to your humming, attempt to identify the song fragments, and then search the internet for matching information. She started the project after being frustrated about being unsure if her original compositions where in fact original.
At this stage the software only works with MIDI files but she has plans to expand to MP3.
While this will only find a tune you already know funding has been granted for another project to try and develop 'smart' agents able to critically assess music, and find similar styles and quality. Not many details have been released, but the future of finding music sure is looking interesting.
