On the surface the re-release of the 'Emotional Technology' looks like the standard record company ploy of throwing some new content on the end and re-selling to increase profits. Thankfully this not the case with this collectors edition.
Although the release does contain a bonus disc, the primary album has also been reworked with new tracks replacing some of the originals. While 'The Meeting Of A Hundred Yang' is simply a new intro, 'Kimosabe' and 'The Revolution' are worthy of the original release and have not comprimised the flow or overall sound.
'Kimosabe' challenges traditional genre's in typical BT style consisting of a mix of rock, hip-hop and breaks. Heavy guitars create a nice intensity as the tracks origins in the soundtrack to 'The Fast and the Furious' become obvious. Also created for a soundtrack ('Tomb Raider'), 'The Revolution' has a very similar style and suffers without any stand-out elements.
The bonus disc, except for 'Love in the Time of Thieves', is a collection of remixes that would make any DJ happy.
'Love in the Time of Thieves' has a different sound to the rest of the album which is obviously why it's on the bonus disc. It starts off with great atmosphere but unfortunately loses its way just after the main breakdown degrading into BT's standard stutter of blips and bleeps. I get the feeling we may see some great remixes of this track to come.
Tiesto's remix of 'Force of Gravity' also gets off to a nice start with a nice rolling bassline. Unfortunately though it too suffers towards the middle and loses it's energy and verve. Dylan Rawshaker's Push Up mix on the other hand maintains itself throughout and would be a great warm-up track for any set.
The stand-out track for me is Sander Kleinenberg's Convertible mix of Somnambulist. While it's very back to basics progressive track it builds nicely and keeps your foot tapping the whole way. At over ten minutes in length it's a great introductory track with plenty of opportunity to layer and build your set over the top.
Overall the re-release is a great package. If you bought the original album but don't consider yourself a fan your probably not going to get much out of this release, but for everyone else it's definitely worth a look. Plus if you like to get behind the decks the bonus disc is great value.
Look out for the album on Black Hole Recordings.
